Barry Steakfries is at it again in the latest release from Halfbrick, Jetpack Joyride. This incredibly addictive side-scroller pits your jetback skills against a myriad of death traps as you try to get Barry as far into the lab as possible. Along the way you will face a bunch of nasty obstacles including electric shock fences, homing missiles, laser beams, and many others. Along the way you will pickup coins, spin tokens, and vehicle power-ups.
The coins will allow you to unlock new clothing, jetpacks, vehicle upgrades, and utilities. If you are in a rush for these upgrades and don’t want to collect coins, this title does support micro transactions where you can purchase coins in various bundles. Ranging from $0.99 to $12.99, these coin bundles speed up the game unlocks although they don’t give you an overall advantage against your friends or the rest of the leaderboard. There are a TON of unlock-ables in this title so plan on spending some time collecting coins or dropping a few $$ if you want them all.
As you play through the level you can pickup spin tokens which you will use at the end of each run. You can either cash them in for 50 coins a piece or test your luck and spin the slot machine to try for other prizes. The prize list includes: Coin Bonus, Coin Prize, Coin Jackpot, Small Blast, Big Blast, Atom Blast, Second Change, Extra Spins, Double Coins, and Head Start. The more tokens you collect during your run will designate how many pulls of the handle you get.
The vehicles are a pretty cool edition to the game as well. They help keep Barry a bit safer as they allow you to get hit 1 time and continue on your way through the lab. The vehicle list includes: Lil Stomper, Crazy Freaking Teleporter, Profit Bird,
Bad As Hog, Anti-Gravity Suit, and the latest release Mr. Cuddles. Each of these vehicles has 2 upgrades, a magnet the attracts the coins to you and a Gold version of each as well. The vehicles each add an interesting twist to the game, my favorite has to be the Crazy Freaking Teleporter simply because it is FREAKING CRAZY! It is a blast trying to around the screen while avoiding obstacles. Trust me, you have to try it to see what I mean.
Alongteleport with all of these goodies, there are missions you can complete as well. These missions have certain tasks which will earn you stars and “Level Up” Barry. Tasks vary from knocking down scientists to rubbing your head against the roof for a certain number of meters. All of these together add that little extra something to keep you coming back for more. With support for both Game Center and OpenFeint, competing against your friends couldn’t be easier or more addictive.
- Gameplay = 5/5 Crazy addictive gameplay. Support for both GameCenter and OpenFeint means you can connect and and compete against your friends to see who is the best.
- Audio/Visual = 4/5 The background music is fairly simple, but doesn’t get annoying. The game looks nice, pretty standard for the platform.
- Value = 5/5 At $0.99 this is a easy choice, BUY IT!
- Overall = 4.5/5 Very fun game. As usual Halfbrick has done a great job! Be warned this game is addictive!
