An OtterBox Tale – Droid X and the Defender

Many phones have faced off against some of the most deadly opponents, and they never lived to tell the tale. Well guess what, my Droid X has faced some of the baddest of the bad and it still has a story to tell. From things such as the dreaded concrete to spilled drinks in bars. Come along with me on an OtterBox Tale and see all that the Defender series has to offer.

Quite some time ago I was given a Droid X Defender Series case for my gallivanting pleasure and boy was I happy. As soon as I took the case out of its packaging I knew OtterBox wasn’t messing around. I started the install process of the case and a whole 60 seconds later, maximum protection was initialized. The design concept of the defender series case is quite simple and extremely efficient. It is basically two cases that protect the phone. There is one hard case that snaps around the phone that also has a built in screen protector. Putting that one on was a snap, literally. After that you surround the already tank like case with a silicone sleeve that is perfectly molded for every corner. If you even want a little bit more protection, they throw a hip-case in with the defender that not only allows it to be securely put on your waist or belt, but it also acts as a shield to protect the phone even further. The hip-case is a really nice touch, it has a full rotating ratcheting clip to keep it locked into place just where you want it. The phone can even snap into the hip-case facing either forward to protect the screen or backwards so the screen faces out, user preference but of course facing it in offers the best protection.

As I said earlier though, I have been using this case for some time. It has served me very well and survived some nasty situations. I once was in a bar where some lady spilled her drink on the table. My phone was on the table when this happened and it was drenched with an expensive beverage and the shards of glass from its once glorious container. Yes, she even broke her glass that was holding her drink. She immediately asked if my phone was okay. I picked it up, shook it off and said it was never better. It has also survived more then a few drops to the concrete while grabbing things out of my pockets. On average it falls about three to four feet and it has done so in every condition including dry, wet, and even wet-dry (snow). The multiple layers of protection keep my phone very safe and secure, it is still ding free and fully functional to this date.

The Defender series case is a trooper to say the least, it adds an unprecedented layer of protection between your phone and all those who wish to destroy it. I primarily use the case just in my pocket while walking around or working so I usually never have my hip-case (shield) on and it is still the best case I have ever had. Gripe wise, the case only merits two from me but they are not bad. One is the fact that I use it without the hip-case and just in my pocket, because of that I collect a lot of fuzz balls on the case and occasional small pieces of lint under the case. This is of course easily avoided if you just use the hip-case. The only other things I have to complain about is the physical size. This is to be expected though, you can’t have this kind of protection without a large case. It makes my super sleek looking Droid X look like a tank, but that is okay because the protection is totally worth it.

Overall, if you need a case and can afford having a slightly bulkier phone, look no further than Otterbox. The Defender Series is no joke and can protect phones from some of the meanest spills out there. They also offer different series, so if the Defender sounds a little bit much then check out some of their smaller series. The Defender Series for most phones and including mine; the Droid X by Motorola, runs for about $50. It seems a little steep for a phone case but when you consider everything you actually get, it is a bargain. Right now they are even including their all new Oh Snap! Series Case with every order from their website. If you are looking for a protective case for your phone you have to consider OtterBox, they have some of the best cases around to offer. So remember, keep your phone away from danger with OtterBox and above all else, stay frosty.

Value : 5/5 – This is an awesome deal for the money. There are essentially two cases and a hip-case all in the packaging. This awesome trio is the perfect pairing, it is as if it says, “Go on, try to break the phone.” Please don’t really try, I am sure you would win… eventually.
Quality :  5/5 – The case is made with such perfection that even cupid couldn’t make a better pairing. All three elements of the defender series match up perfect with each other and the phone. They use great materials that make your phone feel like it is the hulk, I don’t think OtterBox even knows what the word flimsy is.
Overall : 5/5 – Overall this is the best case I have both ever seen and personally used. I fell in love with the defender series the first day I put it on my phone. I then again fell more in love once I started to drop and spill things on my phone. OtterBox is the go to place when it comes to protection for your portable devices, whether it is a Tablet or a Phone, look no further then OtterBox.

Just an FYI, the Oh Snap! Series Case is was a April Fools Joke thrown by OtterBox. It was pretty funny, and even effective. They basically marketed bubble wrap as a new low level protection case for portable devices. The video they made was awesome.
